Two new studies conducted at the Universities of Tennessee and Hawaii, suggest that consuming
adequate amounts of calcium may help dieters lose weight.
Researchers at the University of Tennessee put 34 obese people on a low-calorie diet. Eighteen of
them ate enough yogurt to give them 1100mg of calcium per day, while the
remaining 16 took pills containing 400 to 500mg of calcium. After 12 weeks, the
yogurt group lost an average of 10 pounds of fat while the comparison
group lost 6 pounds of fat.
The comparison group lost an average of a quarter (1/4) of an inch from their waists.
Those in the yogurt group however, lost more than an inch and a half (1½) from their waists.
60% of the yogurt group’s weight loss came from
the belly (compared to 26% for the other group).
